2019-07-22 Iles de Porquerolles, Cote d’Azur West to Calvi, Corsica, France
With continuing calm weather conditions, we again decide to make an early start, for a day crossing to the French island of CorsicaWe spent the night moored in the northern bay off the main town of Porquerolles. Iles de Porquerolles is an island in the Iles d’Hyeres. The island is situated only a few kms from the mainland and has a small population of a few hundred people and a land area of 1254 hectaresHeading east we make our way to Cap des Medes, the north eastern point of Ile de PorquerollesOff the point is an amazing rock formationWe then pass the fortress called the Batterie des MedesFrom the other side the “Rochers des Medes ou des Deux Frères” look equally amazing Continuing east we approach the Ile Port-Cros and Ilot de la Gabiniere which are part of the Iles d’Hyeres Once again with the most perfect calm conditions we continue motoring due east towards the northern part of the island of Corsica After 11 hours of comfortable motoring we see the north western coast of Corsica in the distanceAn hour later we approach the north west coast of CorsicaIn the distance we see the medieval citadel of the ancient town of CalviCalvi apparently has a rich and chequered history. It dates back to the Neolithic period however recorded history was from approximately 1000 BC when the Romans brought agriculture to the landThe walled citadel of Calvi has been well maintained over the years and is a lovely place to visit. Many tourists visit the old town every year and enjoy strolling around the quaint narrow streetsWe anchor out in the large Bay of CalviAs we have visited Calvi several times in the past, we decided to remain aboard and enjoyed a simple dinner of steak and salad
