2015-07-17 Cefalu to Pecorino a Mare, Filicudi Island via Alicudi Island (Aeolian Islands) Sicily
Peter and Michele depart Cefalu before 8am for their sail to Taormina on the east coast of SicilyAt 9am after breakfast we also depart from the lovely old city of CefaluThe splendid medieval Cathedral of Cefalu overshadows the fishermen’s dwellings lining the seafrontWe leave mainland Sicily and head north to the Aeolian IslandsThe first island we visit is Alicudi which is only 5 sq kms in size with a small village with colourful houses on the eastern hillsideFaraglione della Canna, the amazing basalt stack by Filicudi Island was well worth visitingAs we arrived we all agreed that we had to have a swim hereWe anchored the boat and Ric and I swam quite a distance to the base of the famous basalt stackThe scenery on all the volcanic islands in the Aolian group is quite amazingThe ancient lava flows can still be seen on the now extinct volcanic islandsAfter our long swim near the stack in the north east, we motored around to the south coast of the islandContinuing further we dropped anchor again near Capo GrazianoNearby, also on anchor was an amazing sleek black rather large yachtOnce we had another swim we returned to the the tiny village of Pecorino a MareBy picking up one of the local mooring buoys we were assured of a comfortable nightIn the evening we go ashore to the small village
We heard on the grapevine that the restaurant called La Sirena in the hotel was quite goodWe all were quite surprised how fresh and tasty the starters were when they arrived at the tableRic ordered the lamb chops and potato tonightThe rest of us had the fish with the delightful tomato, caper and herb sauceOnce again we all are happy with our choices tonightGood Sicilian wine tooWhile dining at the restaurant we met famous English food writer Matthew Fort who is currently writing about food around the islands of Sicily. He is travelling between the islands by ferry and around the islands with his Vespar – interesting man !!
