2015-07-17 Cefalu to Pecorino a Mare, Filicudi Island via Alicudi Island (Aeolian Islands) Sicily Peter and Michele depart Cefalu before 8am for their sail to Taormina on the east coast of Sicily At 9am after breakfast we also depart from the lovely old city of Cefalu The splendid medieval Cathedral of Cefalu overshadows the fishermen’s dwellings lining the seafront We leave mainland Sicily and head north to the Aeolian Islands The first island we visit is Alicudi which is only 5 sq kms in size with a small village with colourful houses on the eastern hillside Faraglione della Canna, the amazing basalt stack by Filicudi Island was well worth visiting As we arrived we all agreed that we had to have a swim here We anchored the boat and Ric and I swam quite a distance to the base of the famous basalt stack The scenery on all the volcanic islands in the Aolian group is quite amazing The ancient lava flows can still be seen on the now extinct volcanic islands After our long swim near the stack in the north east, we motored around to the south coast of the island Continuing further we dropped anchor again near Capo Graziano Nearby, also on anchor was an amazing sleek black rather large yacht Once we had another swim we returned to the the tiny village of Pecorino a Mare By picking up one of the local mooring buoys we were assured of a comfortable night In the evening we go ashore to the small village We heard on the grapevine that the restaurant called La Sirena in the hotel was quite good We all were quite surprised how fresh and tasty the starters were when they arrived at the table Ric ordered the lamb chops and potato tonight The rest of us had the fish with the delightful tomato, caper and herb sauce Once again we all are happy with our choices tonight Good Sicilian wine too While dining at the restaurant we met famous English food writer Matthew Fort who is currently writing about food around the islands of Sicily. He is travelling between the islandsby ferry and around the islands with his Vespar – interesting man !! Leave a Reply Cancel replyYour email address will not be published.
