2019-05-24 Belmond Sanctuary Lodge, Machu Picchu to Aranwa Boutique Hotel, Cusco, Peru

Our delightful last night’s accommodation at Machu Picchu
Fabulous views over the surrounding mountains from the lodge
The entrance to Machu Picchu is literally metres from the Sanctuary Lodge
We were fortunate to have tickets for 2 days visiting the ancient Machu Picchu site
After a damp and overcast day yesterday we were pleased to visit the site today with clear blue skies and a pleasant temperature
The sun was also enjoyed by the many visitors at the site today
The scenery overlooking the incredible site was breathtaking
Roca Sagrada which mimics the shape of the mountains in the background
The Temple of the Condor at the site was open for inspection today
The terracing at the ancient site was unbelievable
The Inca trail winds through the steep hillside to the ridge on the nearby mountain range
To be able to visit Machu Picchu over the past couple of days has been an unforgettable experience
We return to the Sanctuary Lodge for lunch which was included in the tariff, as was all meals and drinks
The traditional Peruvian Pisco Sour was the perfect refreshing drink to have after our second visit to the site
The only transport to and from Machu Picchu is by bus from the nearby town of Aguas Calientes
A
Once back in Aguas Calientes we wait for our train which will take us towards our next destination
Being only 9 km from Machu Picchu, Aguas Calientes is the closest town to the ancient site
After a four hour train trip to Poroy station, we disembark and a driver meets us to take us to Cusco, where we have accommodation booked for three nights
By the time we arrived at the Aranwa Boutique Hotel in Cusco, it was well after 9 pm
The accommodation booked for us at the hotel was very nice and spacious
There was even a spa bath with a shower overhead!!!
