2016-07-07 Golfo di Viticcio, to Marciana Marina, Isola d’Elba
This morning we leave our nice anchorage in Golfo di ViticcioOnce again we approach the port of Marciana Marina which is close to the wonderful bays we had anchored in for several daysHaving had many nights on anchor we decided to have a night in the actual marina in Marciana MarinaEntering the Porto di Marciana MarinaOnce Tangaroa was secured in the berth that we had reserved, we took off to collect the hire car we had also booked the day before!!The Genoese tower which stands prominently at the end of the port
We pick up our small car from a local car rental company behind the eye catching aqua blue building along the foreshoreOnce we collected our vehicle we set off for some sightseeing out of townWe head out of town in the direction of Marciana, one of the hilltop villages overlooking the harbourBefore exploring the hilltop villages we take the lift to the highest peak in Isola d’Elba, Monte Capanne at 1019 metresAt first the small open cages did not look very inviting for someone that is not happy in a ferris wheel!!Looking up the steep slopes to the summit of Monte Cappane looked quite daunting!!Marciana, one of the villages on the slopes of Monte Capanne. The lift for the trip to the mountain departs from a close proximity to the villageWe also can see the old village of Poggio as we go ascend the slopesThe view is quite spectacular as we go higher and higher up the mountainThe long trip up the mountain took us approximately 25 minutesOnce at the top we were able to enjoy the panoramic views in all directionsIn the distance we can see the port of PortoferraioOverlooking Marciana Marina where we are staying this eveningTime to take our trip back down so we can visit the old village of MarcianaWe can see the Tangaroa in the port of Marciana Marina belowOnce safely back down in the ancient 13th Century village of Marciana we enjoyed exploring the quaint narrow laneways of the village
On our return to Marciana Marina we stop at a lookout and see the lovely bays where we had spent quite a few daysIn the other direction we can see the port of Marciana MarinaWe arrive back at the Tangaroa early evening after a very pleasant trip into the nearby mountains and then a quick trip to Portoferraio to a Tim shop to recharge Ric’s precious phone!!
The girls are out rowing training once again this eveningWe arrive late and were lucky we could get a table in the very busy Ristorante Borgo al CotoneRic orders some nice wineWe choose one of our favourite Italian dishes, pesce al forno pomodorini e oliveOne of the best we have tried so far here at Borgo al Cotone!!!Fabulous food in one of the most stunning settings by the waterWe order two amazing chocolate desserts to share – delicious!!!
An attractive alternate entrance or escape route from the restaurant! After our late dinner we take a stroll through the little town which was still quite busy
