28th May 2014 Thessoliniki (Aretsou) Marina, Kalamaria to Platamona
At last we depart Kalamaria and motor south down the western side of the Thessoloniki Gulf. The weather could not have been more perfect for our trip down the coast, with clear blue skies, warm temperature and very little wind. We pass wonderful scenery along the lush mountainous coastline together with villages perched both high in the hills and low along the fertile shores. As we approach the small port of Platamona, which is our destination for the night, we pass the magnificent castle of Platamon. Built in the early 1200’s in a strategic position overlooking the sea, the castle is still in very good condition. High in the background, looking spectacular, one can see Mount Olympus which still has a small cover of snow. Once we are comfortably moored in the small port in Platamona, we set off to explore the small town which is where the ancient town of Herakleion once stood. The town was quite busy as it is a popular destination for Greek and Eastern Europe family holidaymakers. The beach in the town was quite congested, as the temperature was still very warm this evening. Finally we found a delightful restaurant to have dinner in a quieter area overlooking the port. We were pleased with our decision as the food, service and picturesque outlook were excellent. At the Psaropoula Restaurant we met some interesting Swiss people who had ridden their bicycles all the way from their home in Switzerland. Quite an impressive achievement!! After an interesting discussion with our new acquaintances Urs, Beatrice and their friend about wine and whisky we invite them aboard for a wee dram of our Tasmanian variety!
