Tuesday 10th July 2012 Kalafatis, Mykonos to Skala, Patmos Is

 

This morning we made an early start at around 6am from Kalafatis Bay for our long journey to Patmos Island. We expected to be there by lunchtime depending on the wind and sea conditions. Fortunately we had the wind behind us for part of the way and then we changed course towards Ikaria Island before heading south east to our destination to make it a more comfortable journey. On arrival at the southern end of Patmos Island we experienced better conditions as we rounded the point and continued north towards Skala. We all were happy to stop in a lovely bay and swim and relax for the afternoon before going in to the port at Skala. This town is situated in a large sheltered bay and caters well to visiting yachts and tourists. There are many small hotels, tavernas, shops and bike and car hire facilities here. The town is dominated by the high walls of the Monastery on the hill which can be seen for many directions. On arrival the family departed to check out the local facilities and and places to have dinner. On recommendation by a local we ventured to a very busy taverna by the water with the tables in the sand. Here we sampled a variety of the local dishes such as grilled octopus, calamari, grilled zucchini, Greek salad and fresh fish. All the dishes were delicious and prices very reasonable as you find in most places in Greece.
