2016-09-08 Puerto de Arenys de Mar to Port Vell, Barcelona, Costa Dorada, Spain Arenys de Mar with a population of only around 15,500 people depend mostly on fishing and fishing related industries for their economy At lunch time we leave Puerto Arenys de Mar for our 3 hour journey to Barcelona where we have booked a berth for a few days Along the coast by Arenys de Mar the beaches are quite wide and during the summer months the hotels are well patronised On our last visit nearly 7 years ago we had an enjoyable few days staying here at Hotel Colon in Caldes d’Estrac which is close to where we had just departed from We pass the larger town of Mataro, a popular wine growing area which has a population of about 124,000 people. The town actually dates back to ancient Roman times and recently a 1st Century BC Roman bath house was discovered As we continue along, in the far distance we can see the outline of the tall building of Barcelona The old Roman tourist town of El Masnou is just northeast of Barcelona and is famous for growing carnations and also has a strong textile industry Super yachts moored near Barcelona The 3 conspicuous chimneys by Sant Adria de Besos The huge solar panel in Parc del Forum on the outskirts of Barcelona Luxury apartment blocks are numerous around the Parc de Forum area close to where the 1992 Olympics were held The bullet shaped Agbar Tower come into view with the unfinished Gaudi church in the background, as we approach central Barcelona As we continue towards the port looking towards Mount Tribidabo Port Olimpic Placa de Mar the beach in the centre of Barcelona We finally head towards the port entrance A row of freighters are moored off the Barcelona Port today Looking back to the Hotel Arts and the Mapfre Tower, the tallest buildings in Barcelona featuring a very large fish sculpture in the foreground One of the very few boats we have seen during our 3 hour trip to Barcelona Hotel W with it’s modern shape and rooftop bar stands alone on the isthmus near the port entrance We finally enter the large port in Barcelona Super yachts under construction in the harbour The Jaume 1 Tower and the World Trade Center No shortage of super yachts in the port Duana de Barcelona, the old customs building of the Port of Barcelona Rambla de Mar, the walkway over the water with the Mirador de Colon featuring the famous statue of Christopher Columbus high up overlooking the port Maremagnum Shopping Centre The artistic sculpture by fisherman’s wharf The port cable car leaves from Torre de San Sebastian, a tower 78m tall, houses a restaurant and is accessed by 2 elevators Torre del Rellotge Barceloneta, the clocktower which was originally built in 1772 as a lighthouse on Moll dels Pescadors or fisherman’s wharf, was converted in mid 1800’s The entrance to OneOcean Port Vell the famous marina in Barcelona where we have booked a berth for several days After making contact by radio we make our way towards our allocated berth The marina is located in the heart of Barcelona with many of the main sights within walking distance Kismet, a 95m luxury motor mega yacht which was built in 2014, is moored in the harbour at the moment The marina seems to have increased in size since our last visit here nearly 7 years ago As we pass Kismet to access our berth nearby, at only 16m long we feel dwarfed by the massive mega yacht We were allocated an amazing position in the very secure marina, also very close to all the action ashore We were once again very pleased with such a fabulous spot to spend a few days!!
