2016-07-18 Baretti to Porto Molo Mediceo, Livorno, Italy This morning we make an early start from Baretti so we can get to Livorno early enough for Ric to get some physio on his bad back We have a very calm and comfortable trip passing a few towns along the low lying coast towards Livorno Passing Quercianella We approach Torre del Romito (Castle Sonnino) We drop anchor in this bay so we can have a swim however for the first time we get the anchor caught around what was presumably a rock!! With the water too unclear to see the anchor, Ric did some amazing maneuvering and soon we were free!! Up came the anchor and we departed with great relief!! We continued on towards Livorno and couldn’t stop saying how lucky we were to have freed the anchor!!!! A very low flying helicopter gives us a little fright as we continue along the coast With numerous freighters moored nearby we near the outskirts of the large industrial port of Livorno The cranes and the entrance to the historical old port can be seen clearly One of the large ferries to Corsica and Sardinia leave the port as we approach Although the population of Livorno is only around 160.000, the industrial port is mainly for shipping petroleum and bulk cargo As we enter the large port we can’t help noticing the lack of fuel tankers, probably due to the low oil prices of the current times A statue of the Madonna and child amoungst the cranes overlooks the port A fellow sailor whom we met in Isola d’Elba, told us where to book and safely stay while in Porto Livorno The large Porto Livorno is made up of numerous canals which all seem to link up somehow Finally we arrive in Porto Molo Mediceo in the heart of the port and with the helpful assistance of young Titsiano, the Tangaroa was safely moored A great view of Fortreza Vecchia which is a large old fortress situated in the port Looking across to the other side of Porto Mediceo The port is very secure and has the usual facilities including a bar nearby On the other side, our elegant neighbour is flying a boxing Kangaroo!!
