Leaving the hotel early to make the most of our last day in Granada, we spot someone who had a comfortable dry bed overnight!!Close to Alhambra we catch the tourist train which takes us past the Justice Gate which is without doubt the most important gateway to the whole royal cityAt Plaza Nueva we get off the train to continue on foot to walk to Albaicin passing the magnificent Renaissance building of the Royal ChanceryThe Church of Santa Ana between Plaza Nueva and Carrera del DarroIt time for a coffee at La FontanaWe continue along the Carrera del Darro, a sinuous cobbled street that follows the course of the River Darro by The AlhambraOne of the less imposing churches of the area
Paseo des los Tristes (passage of the sorrowful) apparently was the area in the past where funeral processions left to make their way to the cemetery. Today it a happy place with nice eateries and a wonderful view of The AlhambraWe arrive back to the “Estrellas de San Nicholas ” restaurant where we dined the previous evening at Mirador de San NicholasAt the Mirador de San Nicholas which is the best viewing spot for The Alhambra, young Spanish musicians entertain the crowdsAlso great views of The Alhambra from the higher spots in Albaicin
We meet a very friendly and helpful gentleman called Robert from Germany who was also visiting GranadaWe decided to climb the many steps to the church on the hillThis church is another very popular viewing area of The Alhambra at sunsetFabulous view from hereJust below the church on the hillside with the most amazing views of Granada and The Alhambra lives a community of gypsies
We make our way back down and wander through the interesting streets of Albaicin
It was time for a nice leisurely lunch at ‘El Huerto de Juan Ranas’We order a fresh avocado, pineapple and pomegranate saladWe were thrilled to be seated at a table with the most amazing viewWe had to try the house speciality which was a traditional Spanish paellaThe view of The Alhambra from the restaurant was the best we had seenAfter our late lunch we walked up a few steps to the Mirador de San Nicolas which at any time during the day has a gathering of an eclectic group of visitors and localsCalle Santa Isabel la Real in AlbaicinWe return to Central Granada via the elevated streets of Albaicin and capture the magnificent view of the CathedralWe pass a very friendly and relaxed cat on a wall as we head down into the city centerPalaza de las Pasiegas is overlooked by the facade of the CathedralWe enter the massive Cathedral with it’s huge marble pillars and gold interior
