2015-09-01 Golfo di Campo to Rada di Portoferraio, Isola d’Elba, Italy We dined at the fabulous Ristorante Iselba da Piero last night A Water Jet Pack in action Our new NZ friends, Pete and Kathy come over before we leave Golfo di Campo For the past 8 years they have been sailing on their yacht ‘Wave Runner’ and had sailed her most of the way from New Zealand We hope to catch up with Pete and Kathy again before they continue north to Genoa, from where they actually are going to ship their yacht home to New Zealand We leave the bay as we intend to go to the main port in the north of the island as we have found an oil leak in our generator Naregno Beach near the town of Porto Azzurro We pass the town of Porto Marino which is on the east coast of Elba Continuing to Capo Vita and Isola Palmaiola in the north west A small anchorage by Capo Vita Once around Capo Vita we head south towards Portoferraio A group of yachts sailing up the coast was a wonderful sight The coastline is quite mountainous in many parts of the island The colours of the rocks along the coast are spectacular The island is also heavily wooded and very fertile Plenty of ferries travelling to and from Elba operate regularly from Piombino on the Italian coast No anchoring in Cala Bagnaia A yacht anchored in a charming spot Sailing is very popular in the bay where Villa Toscanelli is in the background Cala Concia in the south east of the large gulf is a popular area for the local competitive sailing competitions We arrive in Isola Elba’s major port of Portoferraio Linguella Tower at the entrance to the port Portoferraio is a very popular port especially in the summer months Behind the harbour is the 16th century citadel In 1814 Napoleon Bonaparte was exiled to the island of Elba and lived here in Portoferraio for only 300 days Yachts can moor in the main harbour however are only allowed to stay one night during the summer period A lovely looking yacht called Panorama is visiting the port today A young couple with their suitably named yacht ‘Whatever’ enter the port We drop our anchor in the south west of the large gulf of Rada di Portoferraio The huge Medicean Fortress, built on different levels, in the main harbour of Portoferraio A large motor yacht we saw yesterday called ‘Silver Shalis’ arrives in port The Silver Shalis has reserved a lovely position in the old harbour Sunset in Portoferraio We have a feathered friend staying close by Leave a Reply Cancel replyYour email address will not be published.
