2015-07-14 Yacht Club Del Mediterrano, Palermo, Sicily Today we set off for a day of sightseeing around Palemo We enter the old town by the Porta Felice Susie in front of a fountain of white horses near Porta Felice We watch as nougat is being prepared by the locals The hop on hop off buses are always worthwhile taking when visiting a new city Santa Maria della Catena, a 16th Century Catalan Gothic Church The local market with wall to wall umbrellas to protect their produce from the searing summer heat The Palazzo dei Normanni was built by the Arabs over the ruins of a Punic fortress and then later it became the Royal Palace The Palermo Cathedral was built in 1184 on the site of an ancient basilica The Neo-Classical Teatro Politeama Garibaldi Plenty of fresh produce at the daily market in Palermo The main street of east Palermo is Corso Vittorio Emanuele with it’s festival lights Susie organises a sweet bib for her grandson In the evening we happen to come across a lovely restaurant called Gagini The decor in Gagini was modern and elagant The delicious assortment of breads was presented in an attractive wooden box A complimentary starter arrived in a jar We shared a few interesting beautifully presented seafood starters It is great to catch up on all the news from home with our friends Wonderfully presented fish was my choice this evening Ric chose the amazing pork dish The side dish of vegetables also looked amazing The bread chef was very proud of his bread The chocolate dessert was to die for !! The festival lights were shining brightly in the main street We joined the crowds of people lining the main street to get a glimpse of the statue of the patron saint Rosalia as the procession came near Rosalia is the patron saint of Palermo and for over 390 years the city has been paying tribute to her with a festival in mid July The festivities continue with dancers on a well lit stage Once safely back at the boat the fireworks began – what a day!!
