2015-06-24 Marina Di Ragusa This morning we set off for another day of sightseeing and our first stop is the town of Scicli 25 kms from Ragusa The Church of St Bartholomew is one of a hundred churches in Scicli Not a lot of lycra in this Dutch cycling group taking a breather while in Scicli !! Chiesa Madre or the Mother Church in Scicli The beautiful interior of the Chiesa Madre The Baroque exterior of Palazzo San Beneventano One of the amazing carved figures above one of the windows of the Baroque Palazzo Time for a nice cappuccino and some tiramisu cake We also did some shopping atSilvia’s newly opened boutique called ‘Scic.li’ in Scicli – well worth a visit !! The rain drops began when we arrived at Chiesa San Michele Chiesa Di San Maria Della Croce and the convent sit high above the town of Scicli The view over the old town is quite spectacular Scicli is believed to have been inhabited since the 3rd millenium BC The ancient town of Scicli Time for Ric to have his chocolate icecream fix before we depart Scicli!! Our next stop is visiting the walled city of Modica which is situated close to Scicli Corso Umberto is the main street of Modica which in past centuries was where a river flowed through the valley Façade of the Baroque church of San Pietro in Modica We visit he Garibaldi Theatre in the main street of Modica Ric on stage !! Is that him throwing his hat in the air !!! The Garibaldi Theatre reminded us of the beautiful old intimate ‘Theatre Royal’ in Hobart Leaving the car in the main street, we climb many steps to the higher part of Modica to visit the beautiful Cathedral of San Giorgio The view of the hillside from the road in front of the Cathedral Same view as before but with us in it!!! The magnificent San Giorgio Cathedral The exquisite chancel of the Cathedral We have arrived to see florists delivering a huge van load full of beautiful flowers for a wedding in the Cathedral due to start in less than an hour!! We head back down to the lower part of the town to collect the car By car we returned to the higher area of Modica and with the help of some lovely local girls we manage to find the Pizzo Belvedere which has the most amazing view over Modica The panoramic view from high above Modica The wedding is in progress at the Cathedral of San Giorgio below Visitors were welcome to come in briefly and observe the wedding in progress The bride’s dress looked exquisite!! We wait patiently outside for the wedding to finish Finally the bride and groom appeared Immediate toasts with Champagne are usually held as the bridal party come out of the church!! Good idea!! A small train full of tourists are lucky enough to get a unique opportunity of photographing a Sicilian wedding party descending from the Cathedral!
