2015-06-13 Siracusa, Sicily Tangaroa in Siracusa We head ashore to do some sightseeing A bridge connects the ancient town of Ortigia to the mainland Attractive old buildings line the canal between Ortigia Island and Siracusa Blue and white seem to be the predominant colours of the small fishing boats in the canal The local marina called ‘Marina Yachting’ at the southern entrance to the canal The Porta Marina Gateway One of the many narrow long alleyways of Ortigia Piazza Archemede There are several restaurants in Piazza Minerva Looking back into Piazza Minerva The Duomo Attractive cafes and restaurants are perfectly positioned by the Duomo Opposite the Duomo is the beautiful Palazzo Beneventano del Bosco The internal courtyard of the Palazzo The Piazza Duomo The Piazza Duomo looking back to the city’s beautiful Cathedral The Church of Santa Lucia alla Badia Tourists line the curved walls of the water enclosure to capture photos of the resident ducks Looking south to the waterside restaurants of Lungomare Alfeo The entrance to Castello Maniace The Castle was built in the 1200’s Situated on the southern tip of Ortigia the castle is a prominent landmark when entering the harbour The weathered green light house at the entrance to the port Many archways lead to the windows overlooking the open sea and Siracusa bay at the Castle A photo of us together!!! Circumnavigating the island by foot, we head north along the eastern side of Ortigia These villas overlooking the sea must have amazing vews Lungomare di levante with a sheltered swimming spot below Horsedrawn carriages are popular with tourists Many of the old beautiful Villas in this area are in a state of disrepair The stunning coastal view of Ortigia The Church of St Martino Vescovo Much restoration work needs to be done on these uninhabited seaside dwellings!!
